Prelude for Plex — User Guide

Play music from your own Plex Media Server on your Garmin watch, offline, with no phone on your wrist and no subscription.

What it actually does

Prelude downloads music to the watch. It does not stream, and your phone is never in the audio path.

That split explains most of the behaviour below: you choose music with your phone nearby, and you play it with nothing nearby at all.

Before you start

1. Sign in

  1. On the watch: Music → provider menu → Prelude for Plex
  2. Choose Add music
  3. A four-character code appears, e.g. HY2Z
  4. On any device already signed in to Plex, go to plex.tv/link and enter it
  5. The watch continues on its own within a few seconds

You never type a password on the watch, and no password is stored on it. To revoke access later, use plex.tv → Account → Authorised Devices, or Sign out in the app.

If the code expires before you enter it, back out and choose Add music again for a fresh one.

2. Choose the server

If your Plex account has one server, Prelude picks it and moves on.

You may briefly see "Finding your server…" with a counter. Plex advertises every address a server has ever had — including, for servers running in Docker, internal addresses that only the server itself can reach. Prelude tries them in turn and keeps the first that answers.

3. Choose music

Add music offers three ways in:

Lists load ten at a time with a More… row at the bottom. That is deliberate: browsing goes through your phone over Bluetooth, which is slow, and a big library would otherwise take a minute before anything appeared.

Choosing something adds it. It does not replace what you chose before, so you can queue up an artist, an album and a playlist, then sync once.

4. Sync

Add music → Sync now.

Put the watch on its charger, in Wi-Fi range. The watch brings up its own Wi-Fi and downloads from your server directly. Expect a few minutes for an album, longer if your files are being converted.

Sync also removes anything you have taken out of your selections, so it always matches what you asked for.

5. Play

Music → Prelude for Plex. Playback is organised, not one long list of song titles:

Play all appears at every level. Tapping a track partway through an album starts there and continues in order. The album level is skipped when a collection only has one.

Playback works in aeroplane mode, with your phone at home.

Settings

Convert formats

Add music → Convert formats.

Garmin watches can only decode MP3, M4A/AAC, M4B, ADTS and WAV.

If your library is FLAC, turn this on or you will sync almost nothing.

The conversion happens afresh on every sync and uses your server's processor. If you sync often from a large lossless library, keeping a separate MP3 copy of your music is kinder to the server.

Note that .m4a is a container, not a format: ALAC inside an .m4a will not play even though the extension looks supported. Prelude detects this and treats those files as needing conversion.

Downloads

Add music → Downloads lists what you have chosen and lets you remove one. Its tracks are deleted from the watch on the next sync.

Sign out

Removes your Plex token and every downloaded track. Use it before handing the watch to someone else.

Troubleshooting

Messages include a number in brackets. It is the useful part — quote it if you report a problem.

Smart playlists usually appear empty

Plex "smart" playlists — Recently Added, Recently Played, ❤️ Tracks — report a track count but return no tracks through the API that Prelude uses. This is a Plex behaviour, not something the app can work around. Use a normal playlist, an album, or an artist.

Browsing works at home but not elsewhere

Browsing goes through your phone. If your phone is on mobile data and your Plex server has no remote access, there is no route. Enable Remote Access in Plex, or browse while on your home network.

Nothing plays after syncing

Make sure Bluetooth headphones are paired to the watch (not the phone), and that the watch's volume is up. Playback needs no network at all — if browsing fails but music plays, that is normal and expected.

Privacy

Prelude talks to plex.tv (sign-in and finding your servers) and your own Plex server. Nothing else. No analytics, no adverts, no account with the developer, no data collected.

Your Plex token is stored only on the watch, and Sign out removes it along with your downloaded music.
